![]() This week I’m extending my analogy of successful teaching to discuss the TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) framework. TPACK consists of the combination of content, pedagogical, and technology knowledge in creating successful teaching. The conversation this week focusing on, how do educators plan and design an integrated learning (specifically technology) experience?

The activity, “Cooking with TPACK”, started with Nick choosing three tools (kitchenware), and me randomly selecting a task (making a fruit salad). The kitchenware representing the framework tools and the fruit salad as the combined result of meeting the learning objective successfully.
Overall my utensils definitely made things difficult, specifically the spoon. I related this to the disconnect between using technology and meeting learning objectives. I’ve seen this happen to teachers for the sake of “throwing in” technology and that’s why the TPACK framework is essential for educators as a clear map for technology integration.
As an educator, I’m still working on considering technology into all my aspects of teaching as normally as a pencil and paper. In my math class, I make it a point to first identify my learning objectives before integrating technology tools. I recently added an online math application called IXL that directly aligns with grade-level standards. TPACK is also encompassed by the context of our individual students. I am continually asking myself, will this technology tool bring purpose and engagement to this learning experience? I need to also have an understanding of my students’ capabilities and access to technology. If I want my students to get familiar with technology, I need to be giving them access to the tools and knowledge beforehand. With purposeful tools (technology), and the knowledge of how and when to use these tools (will it enhance our content or pedagogy?), I’m able to lift my level of successful teaching!
